Trapani
Expertise by Roberto Valeriani
The particularly luxurious appearance of this piece is obtained thanks to the contrast between coral and mother of pearl combined in an ornate decoration. The band surrounding the carved image of the Virgin has the customary octagonal form with little plant tufts made of coral beads and carved leaves in mother of pearl; around this the motif opens up with carved pieces of coral alternating with the white mother of pearl leaves. This three-dimensional appearance, typical of the 18th-century Trapanese Baroque, finds parallels, as has been written on several occasions, in works dating to the first two decades of the 18th century. A plaque almost identical to ours is illustrated in Splendori 2001 (p. 131): it was certainly executed at the same workshop that made the piece discussed here and another piece, described in the aforementioned book.
